PCYC Crestmead Colour Run – Event Photography

PCYC Crestmead engaged Verlane Media to capture the energy, colour and community spirit of their annual Colour Run charity day in Crestmead, Queensland.

Designed to bring families together while raising funds and awareness, the event combined obstacle activities, team participation and a vibrant chalk finale.

  • Client: PCYC Crestmead
  • Location: Crestmead, Queensland
  • Duration: Nearly 6 hours onsite
  • Services Provided: Event photography (2 photographers)
  • Final Delivery: 148 professionally edited images

The Challenge

Colour runs are visually spectacular — and operationally chaotic.

The very thing that makes them exciting also makes them technically demanding to photograph:

  • Fast-moving participants
  • Multiple simultaneous activity areas
  • Powdered chalk in the air
  • Rapidly changing light conditions
  • Constant movement across open parkland

Protecting equipment while maintaining mobility and responsiveness was critical. There are no staged moments at events like this. Everything unfolds in real time.

Our Approach

Two Photographers, Multiple Angles

With activities occurring across different zones — obstacle challenges, start lines, crowd engagement and the final colour explosion — a single photographer would not have provided sufficient coverage.

Deploying two photographers allowed us to:

  • Capture wide establishing shots and tight emotional moments simultaneously
  • Follow participants through obstacle elements
  • Document sponsor presence and volunteer involvement
  • Cover the chalk finale from multiple perspectives

This ensured no key moment was missed.

Capturing Movement & Emotion

Rather than simply documenting the event, the focus was on storytelling:

  • Children pushing through obstacle nets
  • Volunteers celebrating at the finish line
  • Families covered in colour
  • The dramatic airborne chalk finale

High shutter speeds were used during action sequences to freeze movement, while selective framing highlighted expressions and interaction. During the chalk release, positioning and wind direction were carefully considered to achieve vibrant colour clouds without compromising visibility or equipment safety.

Results & Deliverables

Following nearly six hours onsite, Verlane Media delivered:

  • 148 fully edited, high-resolution images
  • Social media-ready versions for immediate posting
  • A balanced mix of action, candid and wide-scale event shots
  • Strong imagery suitable for future event promotion and sponsor engagement

The final gallery reflects both the scale of the event and the personal moments that made it meaningful for participants.

Why Professional Event Photography Matters

Charity and community events move quickly. Without structured, experienced coverage, the most impactful moments are easily missed.

  • Showcase community engagement
  • Demonstrate event success to sponsors and stakeholders
  • Promote future events with strong visual assets
  • Capture authentic participation rather than staged imagery

For PCYC Crestmead, these 148 images now form a valuable library of promotional content for upcoming community initiatives.

Ongoing Partnership

This Colour Run continues Verlane Media’s ongoing collaboration with PCYC Crestmead across multiple community events. Understanding the flow of their events and their organisational objectives allows for efficient, unobtrusive coverage that aligns with their brand and community focus.
